As part of the Podman 6.0 release, we’ve moved Podman, Buildah, and Skopeo into a new GitHub organization owned by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). For most people, the most visible part of this is that the old repositories in the github.com/containers organization now redirect to https://github.com/podman-container-tools, but we’ve also made some other changes you may not have noticed. 

When we originally donated Podman, Buildah, and Skopeo to the CNCF, we only included those repositories, but we always planned to move in more code eventually. Now that we’ve completed our move of these three projects to a new GitHub organization and CNCF CI, this seemed like the right time. We’ve moved several additional repositories into the Podman Container Tools CNCF project as subprojects, including podman-machine-os (where the OS images run by podman machine VMs are built) and container-libs (which has the storage, image, and common libraries that form the basis of Podman, Buildah, Skopeo, and CRI-O). 

We haven’t finished moving repositories yet. Over the next few weeks, we plan to move podman-py (Python bindings for Podman’s API), the podman.io and buildah.io websites, and some additional utility repositories (e.g., github.com/containers/release-keys where the signing keys used for our releases are stored). Moving other major tools like Netavark and Aardvark-dns is also being considered, though there are things we’d like to do in that space prior to moving them. We have a long-standing desire to combine Netavark and Aardvark into the same repository, for example, and it would make sense to do this beforehand.
